The Theme is DIVAS DOWN UNDER!

This fun, flamboyant competition originated as two separate events that merged, spontaneously, into one, in the late 1980s. During the first Gay Games in 1982, while under the media’s microscope, many swimmers opted to exhibit a careful, traditional persona to the public. Four years later, at Gay Games II in 1986, attitudes among the athletes had changed, and some began to express themselves more candidly. By 1987, at the first IGLA in San Diego, athletes from TNYA brought costumes, wigs, dresses, and Lady Liberty torches to wear while receiving their relay awards. Meanwhile, at an annual friendly meet in 1988 between the Seattle Orcas and the Vancouver English Bay Swim Club, the teams added a final relay to the competition in which the swimmers wore hollowed out pink flamingo floats that they turned into hats and decorated with ribbons.

The growing costume theatrics and the pink flamingo relay united in 1989, when Vancouver hosted IGLA III. By the time Vancouver hosted Gay Games III one year later, teams paraded the deck in assorted ensembles prior to the final event—the pink flamingo relay. Before long, the relay portion of the pageantry faded, comical aquatic sketches took their place, and by 1994, at Gay Games IV in New York, the event was known simply as Pink Flamingo.

All teams are welcome, and encouraged, to compete in the Melbourne2020 Pink Flamingo.

Registrations will close Sunday, January 19 at 11:59pm, Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time.
